Tell us a little bit about yourself …

I’m the type of person who will try anything once. I tried out being a business woman in 2012 and decided it suited me and that I’d keep going. I started by making skincare in my dad’s garage with a Kenwood cake mixer and a sack of bentonite clay. I was out in suburban Taranaki mixing my detoxifying facial treatment at night while working as a support worker during the day. I had a couple of special needs clients and my favourite client was a young man who loved 80s music and dancing at the disco.

They call me a Goal Digger because …

I kept going with my skincare business, moved to Wellington and now have a new office with 2 staff members, 8 products and we’re about to launch our 9th in June. I’m 28 and plan on launching my range into Australia over the next year and aim to create a market leading skincare platform focused on holistic solutions to complete skin health.

I was held back from achieving my goals when …

I had to try to find the right audience to engage with. I found that in the beginning customers came in a series of waves. The first wave of people were my friends and family who supported Tailor Skincare because they loved me and not necessarily what I was doing. The second wave of people (which was more like small ripples once a month) were customers who liked the brand and my philosophy. To me these customers are gold so I made a list of them and made sure to keep in touch regularly. I now have over 12,000 people on my list and send them an email once a week with an informative blog on skincare, what’s going on with us at Tailor HQ and the broader wellness community.

I’m a risk taker because …

I would describe myself as a calculated risk taker. I think it’s important to assess the potential benefits versus the potential loss and throw in gut feel for good measure. Then, if everything checks out, take the risk. I took a risk by quitting my full time job working on the procurement team at the NZ Transport Agency in Wellington. It was scary because I was entering unknown territory. Tailor Skincare wasn’t making enough money to support me, but I was working what felt like two full-time jobs and something had to give. My gut told me I couldn’t give up Tailor Skincare because it makes my heart sing, so I said ‘goodbye’ to a cushy government job and said ‘hello’ to unknown territory, entrepreneurship and the world of Natural Skincare.

If something in my gut is telling me something I listen. I went to Victoria University of Wellington and completed a postgraduate degree in Psychology. One thing I learnt about our sensory systems are that they are multifaceted. What we pay conscious attention to is a very small proportion of the total information our system is processing at any one time. We can take in a lot of information which never makes it into our conscious and I believe it manifests itself as gut feel. Pay attention to this gut feel because we have intuition far beyond what our conscious minds say.

My Kick-Ass Goal for 2016 is …

  1. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Running a small business involves having a million and one things going on at all times. I’ve been making sure I take time out to look at the big picture which is the ultimate motivator.

My vision for Tailor skincare is …

To be the market leader in holistic skincare. What this means is providing products, services and advice which support the three key elements of healthy skin: diet, lifestyle and natural skincare.

Tailor Skincare feeds my soul because …

….when I get customer feedback from a complete stranger telling me how Tailor Skincare has changed their skin, and as a consequence their confidence, I know that I’m doing what I’m meant to be doing and it makes all the long hours and hard work worthwhile.

My top 5 tips for having goddess like skin are…

  1. There’s a bigger picture out there, so why not look outward to the world and open your heart instead of glaring at the mirror. This also means, from a skincare perspective, don’t pop your pimples! Nothing good has ever come from inspecting your skin to find the tiniest little bump and squeeze it all over the mirror.
  1. Limit your caffeine and alcohol intake because they dehydrate your system and take away from your natural life force. When your system is dehydrated and your energy is low you’ll lack that inner radiance which shows on your skin. Instead opt for low caffeine options like green tea or kombucha and alternative beverages like cucumber and mint infused water.
  1. Oil Cleanse, Oil Cleanse, Oil Cleanse. Remove your make up with an oil cleanser instead of stripping your skin. And treat yourself to a luxurious facial massage with an oil cleanser at the end of each day because you’re beautiful and need to treat yourself that way.
  1. Gentle daily detoxing and a weekly detox masque. Detox daily with sulphur rich vegetables from the brassica family like broccoli and kale which help to support phase two liver detoxification. Detox your skin weekly with a bentonite clay masque like Tailor Masque to keep your skin fresh and clear.
  1. Life doesn’t need to be serious all the time… remember the happiest girls are the prettiest.

When self doubt about the business creeps in…

I call Dad. When self doubt about me as a person creeps in I call Mum.

Ladies who inspire me …

A couple inspiring ladies who I’ve got massive respect for who send out positive vibes include:

Makaia Carr – She’s been with Tailor from the beginning and is an inspiration not only in the health and wellness space but as an entrepreneur too.

Marie Forleo – I get her mailer once a week with the latest Marie TV episode and she freaking rocks.

Anne Kemp – (Wonderland PR Firm) – She’s been a rock for Tailor Skincare working behind the scenes to help get $h!t done! And when I hit the wall she knows what to say to lift my spirits. 🙂

When I just need to laugh I …

Watch an entire season of Seinfeld or put on “This is 40” for the 60th time.

While you’re here, let’s set some magic and mindful intentions! In 2016 I will…

Do More … meditation. I need to make more time to slow my mind down and focus on focus.

See More … of the world. We’re going to Bali for the first time this year with my friend Kathleen who runs Live Well Retreats ( Last year Vaughan and I traveled through South America and next year I’d like to see more of Australia (because of business) but in the universe where anythings possible I’d go to Africa.

Be More … kind to myself. I’m my harshest critic and sometimes the things I say to myself when I screw up aren’t that nice. So I’m working on being my own best friend. Because at the end of the day I’ve got to hang out with me all day long.

How do you invest in your body?

Yoga and food.

I love yoga, the detoxifying twists and stress relieving hip openers are bliss and I believe doing handstands daily is the secret to a limber life. My secret is to do one every time I go to the bathroom which can be quite a few depending on how much Libertine Blends Tea ( I’ve had.

I love food and my body feels better when I eat wholefoods.

How do you invest in your mind?

By learning every single day and I’ll never stop. That’s one of the reasons running Tailor Skincare is so much fun because I get to learn new things about the skin, health and wellness and business every day.

How do you invest in your soul?

Travel, friends and new experience.

The best piece of advice I would give my 16 year old self …

Stop smoking Sara! It’s not cool and you’re messing up future Sara’s lungs, digestive system and skin! It’s safe to say I don’t smoke now but I did for 8 years while at High School and Uni. I liked to hang out with the smokers, stoners and outcasts while completing University papers by correspondence and requesting my own study room because I never felt like I fit in with the rest at high school.

My top 3 tips for living a kick-ass fulfilling life …

  1. Don’t settle because it’s comfortable. You’ll end up stagnant and won’t achieve your full potential.
  2. ALWAYS listen to your gut. Because you’re intelligence extends beyond your conscious mind.
  3. High five a stranger. – It turns out 10 out of 10 strangers will give you a high five on the Auckland waterfront if you walk up to them with a smile… and it’s always good to challenge social norms.
