Angela Port | Featured Goal Digger GDNZ Edition

So excited to be starting off a week long showcase of the amazing ladies I have been coaching, with one of my ORIGINAL GDNZ coaching clients, the lovely Angela Port. She is one hard working, inspirational and down to earth GOAL DIGGER! Angela amazes me every session with her progress not only in her business goals but also with the amazing personal growth she has achieved while following her passions and dreams. Angela consistently puts in the hard yards of hustle towards achieving her goals all while finding the balance of being a sensational Mum and Wife while owning and running her own business and working a part-time job! Words cannot describe how proud of you I am Angela and am looking forward to seeing you turn your dreams into reality!! Without further ado..

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

I’m a wife, mother, wedding celebrant, lover of cheese, shoes and love.  I live in Dunedin, with the two men in my life Tristan (husband) and Max (9 ¾ year old), as you can tell I’m totally surrounded by boys (I do secretly love it) but have to put up with Top Gear on repeat, Discovery Turbo, and stinky socks.  I’m the writer, editor and chief coffee maker at Angela Port Weddings, a website designed to help couples navigate the wedding planning process. I’m a cat person, love soaking in my spa pool, loathe both crocs (the shoes, and the reptile)  and polar fleece, and would wear high heel gumboots to watch child play rugby on Saturday mornings if I could find a pair.

What inspired you to sign up with Goal Diggers NZ and start chasing your dreams…

The feeling of “is this all there is in life” surely it can’t be.  I had some ideas about what I wanted to do, in fact the first time I met with Bridget I had a book with 5 different goals, my problem has always been ‘reigning in the crazy’ and staying focused on one goal. I knew that if I had someone that I was accountable too then I would definitely get ahead.

The best part about setting goals around my passion and living life my way is…

Everything is much more exciting when you are following your passion, you learn so much because you’re constantly wanting to learn more.  I have learnt more about myself in the last year working with Goal Diggers NZ and Bridget than I have in the last 20 years.  There have been times when I have had to dig deep and really explore the why, (something was happening or not happening) there have been really emotional times (sorry for the tears, Bridget) and times when I have been proud of myself for stepping outside the comfort zone.  I’ve definitely taken big steps and made a whole lot of progress to achieve exactly how I want my life to look, I’m closer than I’ve ever been.

Tell us a little bit more about Angela Port Weddings…

Angela Port Weddings was created because, as a wedding celebrant I was being asked all sorts of other questions relating to wedding planning when I was meeting with couples.  Most people say to me “We haven’t done this before and we don’t know what we’re doing” so slowly I have created relationships with other wedding professionals in Dunedin to offer couples a place to gain advice, inspiration and an awesome celebrant.

What inspired you to start your own business and follow your dreams…

I love what I do, and I want to be able to do as much of it as I can. I’m still having to work part time at my other job, and fit this all in around that and family life, but the feeling you get when you exceed a couple’s expectations regarding their wedding ceremony,  and share such a special, emotional time in someone’s life is  second to none.

What am I proud about in my life…

  • Been married to a fantastic, supportive man for almost 17 years now.
  • Gave birth to my son, no pain relief!!
  • We moved to Dunedin 13 years ago, from Auckland, not knowing a soul, just knowing we wanted a change.
  • Giving blood (voluntarily) for the first time last year, even though I have a fear of needles.
  • Gave up alcohol 18 months ago, and definitely feeling better for it.

Currently Digging for…

My humongous Dream Big goal is to own and run my own wedding venue, somewhere where I would love to get married, if I was to do it all over again. I’m slowly working towards being able to work in Angela Port Weddings full time. Slow and steady wins the race.

I was held back from achieving my goals when…

The main thing that holds me back is self-doubt, something I definitely need to work on.

I’m a risk taker because…

I’m not really a risk taker. I’m the kind of person who thinks, worries, thinks, talks about, thinks, plans, and then does.

Top 3 bucket list goals ticked off…

  • Bit of a OE with the husband 10 years ago, before child, when we both realised that we hadn’t seen what we wanted to  overseas and we felt like we were missing out. So we spent 5 weeks traveling to some of the places we had always wanted to go, Hong Kong, Europe, New York. Definitely a exercise of patience and understanding in a relationship.
  • Great Wall of China.
  • Have seen most of good old NZ, only a couple of places to check off.

Top bucket list goals to tick off…

  • Tokyo, Japan.
  • Would love to attend the Olympic Games at some stage.

#WORD…

“If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got.”

Get listening to…

Huge fan of “The Exponents”, love anything I can sing along to, especially in the car, loudly.

When self-doubt and CBF creeps in you stalk…

I don’t usually have CBF because I’m generally a motivated person by nature, I suffer more from self-doubt so when I need an inspiration fix I head over to:

When I just need to laugh I…

Isn’t that what cat videos on the internet are for?

While you’re here, let’s set some magic and mindful intentions! I will…

Do More… I’m in the initial stages of trying meditation, and I really want to get into Yoga. I need tools to help me switch off the brain.

See More… Knock off those 2 places in NZ I still haven’t seen yet. Milford Sound/Te Anau and Marlborough Sounds.

Be More… Myself. Recently I’ve been so caught up in what everyone else is doing, and how they are doing it, that I had a type of ‘a-ha’ moment the other day and realised that I just need to be me (because I’m the best person to be me!) and do it the way I like.

I invest in my body by…

I have been an avid gym goer for years now, but have just decided to let that go in favour for more walking in nature, nothing beats a great walk on the beach and I would love to try yoga, because I’m always so tense and incredibly inflexible.

I invest in my mind by…

I love non-fiction books, especially autobiographies. I love Lisa Messenger. I’m a huge social media fan, and so am constantly scouring the internet for wedding stuff, inspiration. I love podcasts, especially Lewis Howes “School of Greatness”

I invest in my soul by…

I find alone time really beneficial. Having to deal with the public (in my other job) it can be quite draining sometimes, so it’s nice to be alone, and quiet. It doesn’t happen a lot, but when it does I always feel better for it.

My top 3 tips for living a kick-ass fulfilling life…

  • Find that thing that lights you up, and do more of it. I know it’s easier said than done. But I think it’s important to keep looking till you find it.
  • Asking for help, when you need it.  It’s really hard, and as women, (and mothers) it can be really hard, because we’re supposed to be able to do it all, with a smile on our faces. But generally people are happy to help if they can.
  • Surround yourself with people who lift you up, not drain you.

My typical day from AM to PM…

6am wake up – check social media while still in bed (I know terrible habit, I know I should be up stretching, and drinking lemon water etc), but it’s the only time I get to do it.

8.15am leave to drop child off at school

9am Start work

2pm Finish work, pick up child from school at 3pm

3.15 Arrive home. Chores. Hang out with child.

5.30 Dinner

7pm Shortland Street

7.30pm Angela Port Weddings working hours begin. Writing ceremonies, blog posts, checking social media, certain times of the year there are a lot of visits with couples, so this may include 2-3 nights out a week.

9.30pm Bed

Two days a week, I have the day off, so usually that includes gym/exercise, possibly a catch up with other wedding professionals, and more work on Angela Port Weddings, when the house is totally quiet, bliss.
